One of the best
reasons to grow Dahlias? The beautiful bouquets. The blooms are absolutely gorgeous and vary so greatly in size,
form, and color. I have constant fresh flower bouquets all summer long - - all over the house - - and always
have so many flowers left on the plants that I give them away. Have allergies? No worries, so do I. Dahlias
are one of the few flowers I can bring in the house and not be bothered by them.
The only difficult part of growing Dahlias is keeping the slugs away in my Pacific Northwest garden. I
grew up in the Southeast where the snails are teensie weensy compared to the enormous SLUGS I fight with here. I use
Sluggo relentlessly to control them. There are other products available that, I've heard, do a much better job
of controlling them, however, this is the only product I know of that can safely be used around pets. If I
start baiting early and stay consistent - I can control them with this product. I also use beer traps - covered of course
(I think Pete
would probably be a mean drunk).
